From building costumes for Zendaya to crafting worlds for Euphoria, this CalArts-trained designer charts his own path in entertainment

In an industry often defined by connections and nepotism, Sam Salman represents something increasingly rare: a completely self-made creative professional who has fought his way into the upper echelons of costume design through sheer talent, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in his craft. As a costume designer, art director, and producer, Salman has contributed his distinctive vision to some of entertainment’s most talked-about projects, all while maintaining his independence and artistic integrity.

The Artist as Builder

“I am an artist. I am a builder, a creator, a fabricator, and a fastener of fashions,” Salman explains, describing his approach to costume design with the precision of someone who understands the craft at its most fundamental level. This hands-on philosophy informs every aspect of his work, from initial concept through final construction.

Trained at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), one of the nation’s most prestigious creative institutions, Salman developed a foundation in fine arts that transcends traditional costume design. His approach treats each garment as a vehicle for storytelling, character development, and visual impact—not merely as clothing, but as wearable art that serves narrative objectives.

A Breakthrough Moment

Salman’s entry into union work came with a high-profile client that would have intimidated most emerging designers: Zendaya, one of Hollywood’s most fashion-forward stars. “My first client when I flipped my shop into the union was Zendaya,” Salman recalls. “I was really thrilled to work on the television show Euphoria.”

That collaboration on HBO’s critically acclaimed series proved to be a defining moment. Euphoria, known for its bold aesthetic choices and unflinching exploration of contemporary youth culture, provided the perfect canvas for Salman’s innovative approach. His costume work helped establish the show’s distinctive visual identity, capturing the complex emotional landscapes of its characters through carefully crafted clothing that resonated with audiences worldwide.

The Self-Made Path

What makes Salman’s story particularly compelling is his candid acknowledgment of the journey’s difficulty. “I’ve never had anybody from the 892 costume guild or the 705 wardrobe union nepotist open the door and pull me in like some Nepo baby,” he states frankly. “It’s been me and I’m still fighting the good fight, I’m fighting it every day.”

This independence has shaped both his career and his character. Rather than viewing his outsider status as a limitation, Salman has embraced it as a source of strength. “I’d like to thank me for being strong enough to walk away from difficult people and difficult situations, and to persevere through the thick and thin,” he reflects with refreshing self-awareness.

A Portfolio of Excellence

Beyond Euphoria, Salman’s résumé reads like a masterclass in versatility. His work on Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans required meticulous attention to period detail while supporting the emotional authenticity of the legendary director’s semi-autobiographical narrative. On Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard, he helped honor a beloved franchise’s legacy while bringing a fresh perspective to its futuristic world.

Amazon’s Outer Range presented yet another challenge—creating a visual language for a series that defies genre conventions, blending contemporary Western aesthetics with science fiction elements. And perhaps most spectacularly, his work on the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show demonstrated his ability to deliver under the highest-pressure circumstances, creating costumes for a globally watched performance that demanded both visual impact and technical durability.

His involvement with the 2016 Global Fine Art Awards at New York’s National Arts Club showcased another dimension of his talents—creating compelling visual experiences for prestigious cultural gatherings, contributing to an event that celebrated 78 nominees across 22 countries.

Philosophy and Inspiration

When asked about his inspirations, Salman offers an unexpectedly philosophical response: “I suppose the thing that I am inspired by is knowledge. The experiential understanding from ‘that’ time in our minds—I am influenced by my exploration of the unknown and the discoveries therein.”

This intellectual curiosity manifests in his design process. “There is no real foresight to my design process but rather a flow of ideas from the zeitgeist and I, but a gestalt, express accordingly,” he explains. It’s an approach that values intuition and cultural awareness over rigid planning, allowing his work to capture authentic moments and genuine emotional truth.

Every Collaboration Matters

Despite working with high-profile names like Zendaya and Steven Spielberg, Salman maintains remarkable humility about his collaborations. “Arbitrarily throwing a name out like Zendaya is a big deal because she is a big deal, but everyone, no matter how star-studded or off-Broadway they may be, everyone is valid, and every person I have had the privilege of working with so far has helped mold me into the better person you see today.”

This democratic approach to collaboration—valuing every creative partnership regardless of profile—speaks to Salman’s fundamental respect for the craft and the people who practice it. It’s a philosophy that has helped him build meaningful professional relationships while maintaining artistic integrity.

Northern Costume and Horse of Arabia

Beyond his work-for-hire on major productions, Salman operates Northern Costume, his costume fabrication shop, where he maintains hands-on involvement in every aspect of creation, from initial concept through final fitting. This enterprise allows him to control quality and maintain the high standards that have become his signature.

He has also developed Horse of Arabia, a menswear line that extends his distinctive aesthetic and technical expertise into fashion. This venture represents his commitment to exploring costume design beyond traditional entertainment contexts, creating wearable art for discerning clients who appreciate the intersection of craftsmanship and vision.

The Fight Continues

Salman’s honesty about the ongoing challenges of his career makes his accomplishments even more impressive. “I’m hoping to one day find myself with a team of like-minded people who have fought diligently and have calculated themselves, with the help of others, but with the perseverance and dedication to their own craft and their belief in themselves,” he shares.

This vision of building a collaborative team of self-made professionals reflects his broader philosophy: success should be accessible to those willing to fight for it, not just those born into opportunity. “I believe in me,” he concludes simply—a statement that carries the weight of every obstacle overcome, every door that stayed closed, and every project that proved his vision was worth the struggle.

Looking Forward

As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, Sam Salman represents a new generation of creative professionals—self-made, multidisciplinary, and uncompromising in their artistic vision. His diverse portfolio spanning television, film, live events, and fashion demonstrates an artist continually seeking new challenges while maintaining the hands-on, craft-focused approach that defines his work.

For those who have followed his journey from that first union project with Zendaya to his current status as a sought-after costume designer, Salman’s story offers both inspiration and instruction. In an industry often criticized for its barriers to entry and reliance on connections, he proves that talent, perseverance, and self-belief can still carve a path to success.

His work continues to enhance storytelling across multiple platforms, creating memorable visual experiences that resonate with audiences worldwide. And perhaps most importantly, he’s doing it on his own terms—fighting the good fight, every single day.
